Sept. 4 marked the fifth anniversary of the Nomad Beer Festival, bringing in a mixed crowd of excited beer enthusiasts to try from 12 “nomadic” brewers within the Czech Republic. The term nomadic breweries is used to describe brewers that travel between different locations rather than use a singular brewery.
As attendees entered the festival, music and the smell of beer filled the air while families and friends gathered along the river to try different beers.
The first booths primarily offered traditional IPA’s and dark beers before so called enthusiasts could try the more experimental flavors.
One of the more unusual beers was a combination of Japanese green tea, matcha, and traditional beer. According to a bartender of the event, Sofie Svobodova, the creation of the beer was a fairly simple story, “The owner of the brewery was friends with someone who traveled to Japan and sells teas. He brought back matcha and suggested the brewery owner try to put it in beer, and they tried it and liked it,” Svobodova said.
With 12 different brewers offering their own style of flavors, the festival offered attendees the chance to go from booth to booth and try something new and exciting. A group of German students on holiday ended up joining the festival en route to a beach volleyball game, and described the festival as, “an unexpected treat,” to get them in the right mindset before their competition.
Whether attending the festival to try every flavor or simply enjoying a holiday afternoon, the festival offered a small glimpse into what opportunities the Czech Republic offers, from its diverse beers to a day spent along the river with people from around the world.
