AAU Football Prepares for Pilsen

With the first competitive game of the season just a few days away, the AAU football team knows that  preparation for live gameplay has never been  more crucial.

On Nov. 2, the team held a full-length intra-squad friendly to test players’ stamina and on-field chemistry.

Despite pouring rain and freezing temperatures, both teams played with effort and intensity, each player aiming to demonstrate readiness for the competitive match ahead. While the game ultimately concluded with a lopsided final score, there were highlights and positive takeaways from both teams, giving the squad confidence heading into the upcoming matchup.

In addition to the organized friendly, the team has been diligently preparing during previous practices for the in-game situations they will encounter on Nov. 11.

At the Oct. 18 practice, there was a heavy emphasis on working constantly with the ball and simulating actual gameplay. Each drill was designed to replicate in-game tactics and help players adapt to the fast-paced style head coach Matyáš Kousek seeks to implement.

“We play focused football, with high intensity,” Kousek said. “Players need to be able to think fast.”

The week’s drills reflected that philosophy. Players practiced quick passes on the wings, leading to shot attempts in the box that required quick reactions. They also ran a fast paced 3-on-2 drill emphasizing intensity and quick ball movement toward the goal.

The team also worked on corner kick and free kick scenarios, individually run by the team’s assistant coaches Ethan Fite and Yernar Kuat and overseen by Kousek. He noted that drill selections were influenced by player feedback, saying that taking this into account is very important to him.

The results were evident in the scrimmage match, where the two sides combined for four goals in a high-scoring and fast-paced game.

“Our players responded to the tactic we implemented in the match really well,” Kousek said. “It is the result of a very long research and observation. We also see good team chemistry, with more experienced players helping the others.”

While there were many positives, Kousek identified areas for improvement before the Pilsen game, particularly in transitioning from defense to attack.

“Our midfield is very strong, but still needs more practice of the tactics,” Kousek said. “Same goes for our wingers, their role is much more team oriented with this established tactic.”

Despite chilly conditions, practice remained lively and focused, and the team appears more and more ready for its first competitive challenge. Kousek said he feels confident in his team’s capabilities as the date of the match approaches.

“We have a very good team, mentally strong and resilient,” he said. “We just now need to put the final pieces together.”

AAU’s first competitive match will be in Pilsen on Nov. 11. Fans are encouraged to attend and support the team.
