As the summer season nears its end and fall fast approaches, Czechia is gearing up for annual vinobraní (grape harvesting) festivals across the country. Just because it’s wine harvesting season, however, doesn’t mean other alcoholic beverages won’t be celebrated either. Beer lovers looking to try new styles and flavors should keep their eyes peeled this weekend, as Prague is set to host the free Nomad Beer Festival.
Set to take place on Rašínovo nábřeží in Prague 2 between the Výtoň railway bridge and Vyšehrad cliffs, the Nomad Beer Festival (otherwise known as the “flying brewery festival”) will showcase alcoholic beverages from 11 so-called “flying breweries” from all across Czechia.
A “nomad” or “flying” brewery, which may also be referred to as a “gypsy” brewery, is one that doesn’t produce beverages in an official location, unlike traditional breweries such as Pilsner Urquell or Braník,based in Plzeň and Prague respectively. These unconventional breweries typically make their recipes through the use or renting of other breweries, typically leading to limited production runs of their beverages.
Also present at the festival will be 12 food vendors, selling everything from burgers to Jamaican, Peruvian and Indian food, alongside much more.
Festival-goers who attend will be able to sample beers, pick and save their favorites, then vote via a QR code for their top picks. At 18:00 on Saturday, the three favorite breweries will be announced after voting closes. Participants can either purchase a 0.3 liter mug for 100czk or bring their own mugs to sample beers. “We only taste beer from glass!” the website for the festival says.
The festival will begin at 14:00 on Friday, Sept. 4, and last until 21:00 the same day, before reopening at 10:00 on Saturday, Sept. 5, and lasting until 21:00 that day.
