Pickle Festival in Prague: A Weekend for Pickle Lovers and Haters

Výstaviště was full of pickles this weekend as the second annual Pickle Festival attracted students, foodies and curious individuals.

Taking place on Sept. 19 and 20, the festival provided a range of pickled and fermented foods from local Czech companies and large distributors.

Sponsored by Efko and Machland, the festival offered a mix of food, with smash burgers and fries available for anyone taking a break from all the pickled items, along with music and activities, like decorating pickle crowns or exploring the pickled selection in stock.

The main attraction for visitors at the front of the festival was pickle tastings, along with food stalls lining the front of the Industrial Palace in Holešovice. The festival appeared to be especially popular with younger visitors and families.

Lindi van Rooij, a second-year student at Amsterdam University College, said you didn’t have to be a pickle fan to enjoy it. “It’s even fun for pickle haters. Pickled everything — there are some samples of kombucha, onions, zucchini, sauerkraut and kimchi,” she said.

There is also more offered than just the classic cucumber pickle, with pickled spritzes and sour beer being sold, the festival exhibited just how many different items can be fermented or preserved to enjoy.

For many students and visitors, the festival was a chance to try new foods, have fun with friends and family and to learn more about different cured foods for tasting and purchase.
