Next Stop Valeč: Exploring Czechia’s Baroque Chateaus

Most tourists make Prague castle one of their first stops when visiting the city, but for people looking for more adventure there are a number of lesser-known chateaus and castles worth visiting within easy reach of the city.

Over the past weekend, Czech castles opened their doors for free admission; an event that drew many visitors thanks in part to warm fall weather. While the free offer was for one day only, seeing these lesser known castles is still far cheaper than in Prague.

Karlštejn, Křivoklát, Kokořín and Valeč are a few examples of spots worth visiting all within an hour bus or train ride from Prague. They range from sprawling complexes like Karlštejn to the Chateau Valeč, located in a park that surrounds the baroque building.

Statues by famous baroque sculptor Matyáš Braun stand in front of the building, welcoming visitors to the chateau where entry normally costs 220 Kč to visit. Those on a budget could enjoy the park for free Sunday.

The chateau has a long and rich history. After 1945, it served as an orphanage until a fire destroyed the complex in 1976. Reconstruction is still taking place, but the 16th century site remains open to the public.

An elderly Czech couple, Michal and Iva, decided to take advantage of the free offer, saying their favorite part was the lapidarium housing sculptor Matyáš Braun’s baroque statues made between 1730–1735.

The lapidarium was also a particularly popular site for visitors, a two-room gallery where sculptures are kept. One room included mythological figures such as Zeus’ father Cronus and titan goddess Selené. The other room held sculptures that were allegories of human qualities. The room also included one of the chateau’s former owner’s friend Count Špork.

Chateau staff said the free tickets drew more visitors than usual but that the site keeps busy most weekends, with around 400 people daily. During the week when mostly locals and school groups visit, the chateau attracts around 100.

The chateau complex houses many workshops and theatres, as well as free lectures on a variety of topics. Guided walks also take visitors to areas around the complex that are often closed.

The best way to get to Valeč from Prague is a bus from Zličín metro for a trip that takes just over an hour, offering a way for AAU students to take part in what is a traditional weekend activity for many locals.
