The Žižkov Carnival is an annually held neighbourhood festival rooted in pre-Lenten traditions. The parade marks the final days before Lent, a period associated with restraint throughout Christian history. Locals and tourists fill the streets in costumes and masks, accompanied by live music as giant puppets that are hoisted over the crowd. It is more than a spectacle. The carnival reflects Žižkov’s enduring reputation of being Prague’s cultural centre.
