The End of the Sweet Chili Chicken Wrap Monopoly?

New meal options were introduced at AAU this month, including a canteen at Charles University and an on-campus vending machine in response to student satisfaction surveys conducted in Fall 2024 according to administration.

Early word of mouth feedback suggests the impact has been minimal. In a survey of 17 students, none reported using the new canteen, with many expressing indifference or a lack of awareness about the updates.

“Of all the things to spend our tuition money on, why a vending machine?” said an anonymous third-year student.

While some students expressed frustration, others, like second-year Neha Pande, have opted for the vending machine due to its affordability compared to Café des Taxis, AAU’s primary dining option for students.

The staff at Café des Taxis were not formally consulted about the expansion of food services. University administration clarified that the new additions were intended to “supplement, not replace, existing food services.”

Café des Taxis offers a range of sandwiches, pastries, and a single hot meal each day, with the sweet chili chicken wrap standing out as a longtime student favorite for 89 CZK. Snacks like pretzels, chocolate, and sandwiches from the vending machine are priced around 50 CZK.

The new canteen was advertised for its affordability, offering meals for an average of 100 CZK, as well as its diversity in meal options. As opposed to Café des Taxis, who only offers one vegan and one vegetarian option when available. The canteen offers several meals that cater to various dietary options.

Despite the added options, student loyalty to Café des Taxis remains strong, with 70% of survey respondents indicating they plan to continue using the café over the new canteen.

The Charles University canteen hours are from 11:30 AM to 2:15 PM, overlapping with AAU classes that run from 11:15 AM to 2:00 PM. As a result, students can only use the canteen on days when they do not have classes during these hours.

“If we see strong and sustained demand outside the current hours, we will advocate for adjustments,” said Jeta Sahatqija, the Vice President for Student Affairs.
