Exchange Program Deadlines Approach For AAU Students

AAU internal applications for exchange programs in fall close next week with opportunities spanning across 37 universities worldwide.

Due to some universities’ limited spots for AAU students, the internal application process will select the most compatible applicants and must be completed before applications with the host university.

Students have the options of an Erasmus+ program in European universities or direct university exchange programs across Oceania, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Of the university options available, students can continue majoring in business administration, journalism or social sciences.

Exchange programs to Leiden University College, New Brunswick, Rikkyo, Hawaii Manoa and Florida Atlantic are closed.

The requirements for students looking to study past Czech borders include one year of completed studies with a minimum 2.5 GPA, though some universities are more strict on their applications – such as Leiden in the Netherlands and Chapman in California which both require a 3.0 GPA. Those students who are in their final year and plan to graduate in 2026 are not eligible to apply.

At partner universities, students continue paying AAU tuition, and do not pay host university fees. Erasmus+ participants may receive EU grants to offset the cost of living in another country. However, this funding is not guaranteed for everyone and if budget constraints arise, scholarships are allocated based on GPA.

“The Erasmus scholarship is intended as a contribution to the cost of studying abroad,” the official announcement from Richard Olehla, AAU Vice-President for Academic Quality & Internationalisation said. “It is not intended to cover the whole of your living costs.”

AAU requires students to apply first internally where they must complete a form that includes their top three universities in their preference order, individual motivation letters for each of their choices, a CV and language certificates if taking non-English courses.

Internal applications will be evaluated by the selection panel with Vice President for Academic Quality & Internationalisation, Richard Olehla, serving as chair. This evaluation will primarily be based on GPA with results announced early March.

Students applying to partner universities must also directly apply. Each of these partners have their own separate forms and deadlines.

Beyond the application process itself, there are many common challenges that students face. Non-EU students will likely encounter visa complications in the application process, and all students must navigate housing and course availability challenges.

Additionally, credits earned abroad, while typically transferred back to AAU, must involve coordination with the student’s dean beforehand for approval.

“Because you will be paying AAU tuition for 30 ECTS credits while you are away, we strongly recommend you aim to take 15 US/30 ECTS credits per semester at your [host] university,” Olehla said.

Some exchanges come with special conditions as well. The University of Amsterdam only accepts third-year students, while Chapman conducts its own final selection from AAU’s nominees and may require students to submit English test scores meeting a TOEFL 79-80 or IELTS 6.5 after the application process.

For interested students, review the detailed information in the AAU Net available here and direct further questions to Cyril Simsa, Natalie Kvackova-Sipula, or Beáta Tomečková at the AAU International Office.

For those who miss the deadlines, there are future opportunities as AAU runs additional panels every semester.
