Babí Léto Brings Last Warm Days to Prague

Students, locals and tourists spend the last days of warm weather in Prague strolling across Charles Bridge, drinking in beer gardens and enjoying dinners and gelato outside.

The warmer weather during the last summer days, which the Czechs’ call Babí Léto, is often spent by locals and tourists alike taking advantage of the outdoor beauty in Prague. In order to prepare for the grim winters everyone is out getting a final glimpse of the outdoor gardens and late nights in parks.

“The weather hasn’t yet interfered with my studies but once it gets colder and the days get darker it will be harder to go to class, ” said Arianna Oya, a first year Spanish student at Anglo American University.

Temperatures are expected to reach 22° C this week before plummeting a projected 10 degrees by next week. This makes it the best time for locals to savour a drink outdoors.

“I wanted to take my family to Prague this time of year,” said Christian Fuhrmann, a father from Germany. “It’s not uncomfortably hot currently and so we chose to come at this time.”

Locals will be getting layered up and toasty this autumn, and tourists are blown away by the city’s charm.

“Winter time is quieter than normal here at the restaurant. For myself I need to buy more sweatshirts,”  said Stanislav, a 30-year-old Prague worker at Vojanův Dvůr, a bar and restaurant. “As Czech [people] we prefer to go out and drink beer in summer, and during autumn stay at home, watch TV and spend time with family.”

The final day of warm weather, 20° C or higher within the 10-day forecast, is projected to be tomorrow, Thursday Oct. 8. Following tomorrow, the weather will still be beautiful, but far less warm.
