Guide to a Budget Weekend in Brno

For students living in Prague, a weekend getaway doesn’t have to break the bank, for just two hours away the city of Brno offers character and affordability.

Getting there from Prague is easy, with student ISIC card discounts on buses and trains making the round-trip costs low, according to AAU students Julia Osterman and Hadley Hageseth, who traveled there for only 300 crowns each last weekend.

Once in Brno, the small city center makes most attractions within walking distance. Brno’s highlights include Špilberk Castle and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, both of which are free to explore from the outside and inexpensive to enter.

“We went into the church and castle, a lot of the attractions we went to we didn’t have to pay for. We spent most of the day walking, and besides food, our costs were almost nothing,” Osterman said.

Brno has been climbing in popularity as a tourist destination in recent years, appearing on top travel lists and hosting several Michelin recommended restaurants. As a result, more than one million travellers visited the city in 2025, according to Czech Tourism.

“If you want to experience some Czech magic but are on a budget, then Brno is the place for you,” Hageseth said.
